Rochelle likes to say she found this ring at MOMA. She didn’t, of course. She found instead a steely-blue-eyed artist twice her age. He was reclining on the steps, and at first she thought he might be homeless. But then she recognized his face from the bio that accompanied a series of silver, impressionist birdcages she’d admired in the museum. He allowed her to buy him a cup of coffee, advised her not to allow cockatiels to become her passion, passed her his Soho address on a napkin and walked out into the brisk fall air. The enamel ring she discovered later, at home, in the pocket of the overcoat she’d worn that night.
