There’s very little to recommend the bus trip between Las Vegas and Lincoln, Nebraska, particularly in winter. Tia tried not to think about the carnival atmosphere of the casinos, the glitz of the stage shows or the hospitality of the hotel staff as the bus carried her halfway across the country, back to the university. This ring, a simple, sophisticated, enamel band, became her focal point on that fateful trip, and she twisted it on her finger, imagining the tires rolling beneath her. She twirled it again, a year later, remembering the cold bus ride, when the hotel’s corporate jet touched down in Vegas, then again in the limo on the way to the hotel, and once more, just for good luck, as she sat down behind the marketing director’s desk, her master’s degree already framed on the wall behind her.
